FLUX WORK STUDIO

Studio History

FluxWork Studio, established in 2008, is a communal jewelry studio with two locations in Ithaca, NY and Greenpoint, Brooklyn. More than just a workspace the studios have become a community where artists come together sharing space and ideas.

FluxWork Ithaca is a productive and safe work space for aspiring jewelers and small works artists located Downtown surrounded by some of Ithaca's best shops and restaurants.

The Ithaca Studio is 500 square feet with many windows and wonderful natural light throughout the day. All students and members have access to bench space with shared tools.

Classes



Geometric Earring

75.00 / 2.5 hours

In this class we will select each students individual design and focus on using the jewelers saw, files, polishing and blackening methods to complete a finished set of earrings. This class will provide a basic overview of silversmithing technique as you create beautiful pieces of handmade jewelry. Perfect for beginners or for the intermediate student looking to brush up on core hand tools and learn a few production tips and tricks along the way.  Students will have the option to gold plate their finished pieces for an additional cost.

Stacked Rings

$110.00 / 4 hours

A class for jewelers with beginners - intermediate level experience. Here you learn how to make 3 stacking bands in sterling silver. This is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with soldering and also experiment with different finishing styles on each band. Students will learn how to use the jewelers saw, forming tools, flex shaft and a smith torch. During class we will talk about different designs and explore many options of applying textures and finishes to your ring (materials included).

 
 

 Simple Band

 $85.00 / 3 hours

In this beginners class we will go through all the steps of how to construct a simple band in sterling silver from beginning to end. Students will learn how to use the jewelers saw, forming tools, flex shaft and a smith torch. During class we will talk about different designs and explore many options of applying textures and finishes to your ring. This is a fun class to get acquainted with common tools and make a cool ring for yourself or someone special. If there is extra time you are welcome to make a second ring for an additional $15.00 (materials included).

Bench Time

$15.00 per hour

Students and jewelers with experience are welcome to come in during open studio hours. We are a fully functional lab equipped with a soldering station, forming tools, drill press, band saw, rotary tumbler, flex shaft and open bench space to work on individual projects outside of class hours. Stud Earrings

$75.00 / 2.5 hours

A great workshop for everyone. In this class you will get to make 2 pairs of stud earrings. Keep both for yourself or give a pair to a friend! Studs have been our favorite because they are such a timeless and simple style. We love that you can wear them everyday and forget they are even on. Create something classic or adventurous in sterling silver. We will go over all the tools and steps to turn a design into something you can wear home (materials included).

 

Bracelet Wax Carving

$300.00 / 6 hours total in 2 part classes

In this 2 part class we will cover the basics of wax carving by creating a one-of-a-kind bracelet. Wax is a widely used material in our trade and opens up endless opportunities for designs. Here you will learn the in's and out's of the casting process and be introduced to carving, adding texture, and finishing techniques while working on a wax prototype. Sketch a few simple designs before class and together we will discuss how to actualize one of the bracelets with the skills you learn.  After completing the design in our first class the bracelet will be sent to a casting facility in New York City. During the two week break a mold will be made of your design along with a wax copy and a sterling silver casting. During the second phase of our class students will receive a mold, wax copy and learn how to finish their individual casting (materials included). Additional fee for extra large designs and casting multiple bracelets.

 
 

Ring Wax Carving

$200.00 / 5 hours total in 2 part classes

In this 2 part class we will cover the basics of wax carving from beginning to end. Wax is a widely used material in our trade and opens up endless opportunities for designs. Here you will learn the in's and out's of the casting process and be introduced to carving, adding texture, and finishing techniques while making 2-3 wax prototypes. Students will pick out one ring to be sent to a casting facility in New York City. During the two week break a mold will be made of your design along with a wax copy and a sterling silver casting. During the second phase of our class students will receive a mold, wax copy and learn how to finish their individual casting (materials included). Additional fee for casting multiple rings.

Make Each Other's Wedding Band

Price based on class size and material. 

A private class focused on making a simple wedding band for your partner or two bands for each other. Celebratory glasses of champagne will be served after completion! Please email to inquire about more information. Pricing based off one or two people and choice of gold or silver material.

 

Jewelry Production

$100.00 / 4-5 hours

A special class that covers helpful pointers it took years for me to gather. In this session jewelers will learn how to develop their designs into a smart line of jewelry for production. We will talk about small scale production in a studio and the benefits of outsourcing work and materials locally and nationally. Students will learn about production resources, wholesale and retail pricing, product photography, line sheets, looks books and effective ways to approach stores. We will also cover how to get involved with professional trade shows and pick the right one for you!
Before the end of class we will have time to collectively look at each students work and provide both technical and aesthetic advice.
